Getting started in 5 minutes
- Open Timetable and tap each period to add the subject, class and grade.
- If your school uses a Day 1–6 (or similar) cycle, first go to Settings → Timetable and choose “Day 1 to Day N cycle”, then pick a date that was Day 1.
- Tap a lesson on the timetable and choose Lesson plan or Worksheet to create something for that date.
- Open Assistant and type “Remind me on Friday to collect the permission slips”.
- Add TeacherStudio to your phone’s home screen (see below).
Timetable: weekly or Day 1–N cycle
Quickest way: on the Timetable page tap Add from a photo, take a photo of your printed timetable (or choose a screenshot or PDF), check what was read and save. It works best with a clear, typed timetable of your own lessons.
Blocks that aren’t lessons, such as assembly, register or admin time, can be added as Not a lesson.
Most schools repeat the timetable every week (Monday to Friday). Some use a cycle like Day 1 to Day 6 that skips weekends and holidays.
Choose yours in Settings → Timetable. For a cycle, enter a date that was Day 1; TeacherStudio counts school days from there and skips weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
Change period times with Change period times under the timetable. A lesson marked ✓ 2 ready has material made for that date; Topic set means you’ve planned a topic but not made anything yet.
Preparing a lesson
Tap a lesson on the Timetable (or on Home or the Calendar). Choose which date, then tap a tool such as Lesson plan, Worksheet or Test. What you create is saved against that lesson, so it shows on Home and the Calendar.
The lesson page lets you set the topic and your own notes for that lesson.
How did it go? After the lesson, mark it Taught, Partly or Missed and add a short note. Home asks you about lessons that have ended. The next lesson you create for that class takes your note into account.
Same subject and grade in more than one class (say 7A, 7B and 7C)? On the lesson page, tick Also set this topic for and choose each class’s lesson. After creating something, or on the document in your Library, use Also for your other classes: each class gets its own copy, linked to its own lesson. A term plan can also be saved for your other classes, and the assistant can do it for you (“also make this worksheet for 7B”). Planning for submission puts these classes in one table, each topic once with the classes and dates. From then on every class is separate: changing a topic or document, or catching up after a missed lesson, in one class never changes the others.
Missed a lesson? Choose what should happen to the work: move everything one lesson on (topics and material move up to the first free lesson), combine it with the next lesson, ask the assistant for a catch-up plan you can check before saving, or leave it. If you know in advance (a sports day, say), tap the lesson on the Timetable, then Won’t happen? (or open the lesson page). Cancelled lessons show in red on the Timetable, Calendar and Home. Changed your mind? Restore this lesson puts the later lessons and their material back as they were.
Creating material
Open Create and pick a tool. Fill in the grade, subject, term and topic, plus the tool’s own options (for a test: total marks, time and the mix of question levels). It takes 20–60 seconds.
Term plan gives every lesson of a class a topic for the term, following the CAPS teaching plan. Check it week by week, edit any topic or note, make room or remove a lesson, then save. Open a class again later to edit the saved plan. Assessment plan puts the term’s formal tasks and marking reminders on your calendar.
Download planning (on Create or the Calendar) makes a neat week or term planning document for submission, as a PDF or Word file, with your topics, notes, materials and a space for signatures.
Diagrams: lesson plans, worksheets, tests and homework can include number lines, graphs, fraction pictures, shapes, clocks and simple labelled diagrams (for example a plant cell or the water cycle). Choose “No diagrams” if you don’t want them. Not happy with a drawn diagram? Open it in the Library and tap Redraw. In the editor, + Diagram adds one (also ready-made pictures, with a numbered “label the parts” version), and tapping any diagram lets you change its numbers and labels.
Use your own material: under “Use material from your Library”, pick up to two items (for example a file you uploaded) and the new document will be based on them.
More tools: Practical task writes a CAPS formal practical or investigation (aim, apparatus, safety, method, results table, memo and rubric). Chalkboard plan lays your lesson out for the board in sections, with teacher notes. Word cards and lists makes spelling lists, flash cards, matching and phonics cards to print and cut. Mental maths makes daily quick sums with answers instantly (it doesn’t use AI or count towards your monthly creations). Moderation pack turns a test or task in your Library into a pack for your HOD: cover page, mark breakdown, cognitive level analysis against the guideline, pre- and post-moderation checklists and a sign-off table. You can also open it from the test in your Library (“Make a moderation pack”).
AI drafts can contain mistakes. Always check answers and content before using them in class.
Library: edit, download, versions and sharing
- Edit: type straight into the document, as it looks. The buttons add headings, lists, fractions, powers, square roots, answer lines, tables and diagrams. Tap a diagram or a maths symbol to change it.
- Download Word or Print or PDF. Tick “Learner copy” to leave out the memo.
- Make a version: easier, harder, support, extension, or translated between English and Afrikaans.
- Share: send it on WhatsApp, or create a link a colleague can open and copy into her own library.
- Upload a file: add your own PDF, Word document or a photo (for example a textbook page or an old test, up to 10 MB). TeacherStudio reads the text so you can use it when you create something new. Photos and scanned PDFs are read by the AI, which counts as one creation.
Calendar and reminders
Calendar shows month, week and day views of your lessons, reminders, school terms and public holidays. Tap a day to add something to it.
Reminders lists everything you need to remember, grouped by when it’s due. Tick items off when they’re done.
Phone reminders: switch them on in Settings → Phone reminders to get a notification when something is due, even when TeacherStudio is closed. On an iPhone, add TeacherStudio to your home screen first.
When you add an item, choose Remind me: at the time, 10 minutes, an hour, a day or a week before, or not at all. Change it later with the bell next to the item (once the reminder has gone out it shows “Reminded” and can’t be changed; move the due date to get a new one). Your usual choice is set in Settings, where Test a timed reminder checks that reminders reach this device.
The assistant
Ask for ideas, explanations or messages to parents, or say things like “remind me on Thursday at 2pm to capture marks”. It knows your timetable and what’s coming up.
Hold the microphone down while you speak, then let go. Your words appear in the message box; check them and tap Send (works on phones and in Chrome).
TeacherStudio through your school
Teachers: if your school pays for TeacherStudio, it gives you your own code (or a link). Open the link, or type the code when you create your account, or later in Settings → Your school. Each code works once. You then get the school plan, and your school’s letterhead is added to documents you print or download.
Your planning, notes and documents stay private to you. The school admin only sees your name and email address, whether you used TeacherStudio this week, how many documents you’ve made and the time saved. If you leave the school (Settings → Your school), you go back to your own plan and keep everything you made.
School admins: open School in the menu. Add the school’s address, phone, motto and logo for the letterhead. Under Teacher codes, type one teacher’s name per line and tap Create codes: each teacher gets her own code, which you can print, copy or send on WhatsApp. Unused codes hold a seat until they’re used or cancelled. If you also teach, turn on I also teach to use a seat yourself. To pass the school on (say a new principal), use Hand over to someone else at the bottom of the School page: the new person gets a link that only works with their email address.
Before the paid period ends, the admin sees a reminder to renew (30 days before on a yearly plan, 5 days on a monthly plan). After that there’s a grace period (30 days yearly, 7 days monthly) before teachers go back to the free plan. Nothing is deleted.
Add TeacherStudio to your phone’s home screen
- Android (Chrome): open the app, tap the ⋮ menu, then “Add to Home screen” or “Install app”.
- iPhone (Safari): open the app, tap the Share button (square with an arrow), then “Add to Home Screen”.
Use it on your computer
TeacherStudio can be installed on a computer too. It then opens in its own window, with its own icon, like any other program. Your work is the same on every device you sign in on.
- Windows or Mac, in Chrome: open TeacherStudio, then click the install icon at the right end of the address bar (a screen with a down arrow) and choose Install. If you don’t see it, open the ⋮ menu and choose “Install TeacherStudio”, or “Cast, save and share → Install page as app”.
- Windows or Mac, in Edge: open the ⋯ menu, then “Apps → Install this site as an app”.
- Mac, in Safari: choose File → Add to Dock (needs macOS Sonoma or newer).
- Firefox: can’t install websites as apps. Use TeacherStudio in a normal tab and bookmark it.
Afterwards you’ll find it in the Start menu (Windows) or Launchpad and the Dock (Mac). Right-click its icon to pin it to the taskbar or keep it in the Dock.
You can also turn on reminders on your computer in Settings → Phone reminders, so they arrive on your phone and at your desk.
